Prop 19 means large quarrels about cannabis

The debate surrounding Prop 19 has a lot to do with the heat of the 2010 election season. There is a large debate over the prop and its effects. Specifically, the “Regulate, Control, and Tax Marijuana Act. Here is an overview of the arguments about California’s Prop 19.

The fundamentals of Prop 19

Prop 19 would, in short, make recreational cannabis use legal in CA. The voter initiative, if passed, would allow everyone 21 years of age or older to “possess, cultivate or transport weed for personal use.”. Any local government would be given the right to regulate and tax any part of the weed industry. It would also be illegal to smoke in public while anyone younger than 21 was present, and driving while under the influence would be illegal.

Proposition 19 and taxes

If Proposition 19 passed, it can be good for CA financially. Major tax revenue would be there. Prop 19 would make it so there was a $1.3 billion tax revenue from it. It would also allow the $1 billion being spent of enforcing laws on it to end. In a state that has cut paydays to minimum wage to pay bills, that amount of cash could help the state keep paying its employees.

States’ rights argument for Proposition 19

Legalizing cannabis isn't the concern even for many groups. They think it will be one step closer to more rights within the states individually. Regulating intoxicants is something the United States of America federal govt should not be controlling, some say. For Tea Party groups, Prop 19 is proving to be a question of state and individual rights.

Growers fighting against Prop 19

There are strange groups that are really in opposition to California's Proposition 19. Some producers and sellers of medical weed have spoken out against passing Prop 19 in CA. They believe the medical sector will change too much with weed being legal for recreation. Not only could the price of weed drop, but their business could face high taxation’s for a medical product.
