Hall of Fame for Rock and Roll announced for class of 2011

Annually in Cleveland, Ohio, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced a brand new class. Some of the biggest names in popular music are put into the hall which means it is a huge honor. BBC accounts that Neil Diamond, Tom Waits, Brand new Orleans audio legend Dr. John, Phil Spector, Darlene Love and Alice Cooper were all listed for this year's class. Alice Cooper was previously thought to be one of the biggest snubs by the Hall, and many have alleged that punk rock and heavy metal do not get a fair shake. Also inducted are Elektra Records head Jac Holzman, Specialty Records head Art Rupe and session musician Leon Russell.

Hoping to get into the Hall of Fame

Artists are eligible for induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first recording, based on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Those who are inducted are chosen by a committee that gets together every year. They meet to discuss which record executives, producers, recording engineers, studio musicians, recording artists and performing artists could be accepted. After the nominating committee selects nominees, they are voted on by experts. Five hundred ballots are sent out. If performers, non-performers, early influences or side people get enough votes, into the Hall they go.

Nominees trigger controversy

A lot of debate is surrounding the Hall. This is because only popular bands are nominated typically. Several others are upset the Rolling Stone magazine, including publisher Jann Wenner, have too much influence in the process which would be why bands they do not care for like Rush, Deep Purple and others do not get nominated.
